1 Again

* warning - this is a long entry dedicated to my little baby *

asyraf is 1 year old today. i feel like this is such a big moment. i know i've said this a gazillion times but after the year we had with asyraf, i feel like the celebration is as much hubby's and mine as it is his. to say we got through the year is such a wonderful feeling and to be able to say, we made it without help is even more important to us.

i know people may think...what is so difficult about asyraf? where do i start? to begin with, he would not stop crying. no, its not one of those "all babies cry". he is one of those "the only time he doesnt cry is when he's asleep" babies. it was nerve wrecking. he would cry so much, i was afraid my neighbours would move house. he would cry so much, i was scared to send him to a daycare for fear they couldnt handle it (asyraf's first day at the daycare was very bad - for him and for his parents). he would cry so much, i had to run to another room to escape his cries.

not only that, he was sick almost all the time. i could count the times he was well, as opposed to him being unwell. and when he's sick, it is so bad. he would throw up every hour. he would have diarrhea. he would have difficulty breathing. he would have flu. he would have cough. he would have high fever. he would be wheezing. he would have the works and it would all last for 2 weeks. 2 weeks!! and he would get sick twice a month. that means once he's well, 2-3 days after that, the cycle would start all over again.

i remember when i started weaning him. 1 jar of gerber meant 2 weeks of throwing up and diarrhea. we stopped giving him gerbers and shifted to nestum. 1 bowl of nestum would mean another 2 weeks of throwing up and diarrhea. and his throwing up is not once or twice a day. its once or twice an hour! we would put him down to sleep and before we closed our eyes, he throws up. hubby would take him to the bathroom and clean him, i would change his bedsheet. we put him down...2 minutes after that, another session. it got to a stage where there's just no point in putting bedsheet and putting on his clothes. we just put an old kain batik and asyraf would sleep in his diapers.

food isnt the only thing that would make asyraf throw up. not burping would have the same effect. not only when he's 1 or 2 or 3 months. asyraf needed to be burped till he was 7-8 months. if he is not burped, he would throw up.

then sleep...asyraf is a sleep-fighter. he would fight and fight to stay awake. no matter how tired he was, he would not sleep. and then when he feels the tiredness dawn on him, he would bellow out. i would scream "if you're tired, just sleep!" but he wont...he absolutely refused to sleep. after weeks of torture, hubby put him on his tummy (against my wishes) and said "if this is the way we can get him to sleep, then this is the way it has to be".

but the solution to one problem, turns out to be the cause of many, many other problems. asyraf would breathe in all the dust on the bedsheet and the mattress that it gave him bronchiolitis. asyraf would only sleep on his stomach that we had to buy a new stroller that can lie flat so that he can sleep that way all the time. asyraf would not fall asleep in his car seat and would scream and shout in the car when he's sleepy, because he wants to sleep on his tummy. he wants to sleep one way and one way only. it was frustrating!

when asyraf learnt to roll over, it was even more frustrating. he would roll over in the middle of the night and then cry out because he doesnt want to sleep on his back but cant roll back to his stomach. every time he rolled over, i had to roll him back. it would go on for 10-15 times a night and i would go to work the next day in a daze. i mean, i dont mind getting up to make milk and feed him, but to wake up just to roll him back on his stomach...omigod!

so that's asyraf - our crying, clingy, screaming, allergy-prone little boy.

hubby and i were afraid that we were not able to handle asyraf in that condition and a new baby. we were really scared of ariff's arrival. but we said, like it or not, we have to face it. surprisingly, it was not what we expected. alhamdulillah, ariff came without the "handle with care" tag and asyraf just totally changed for the better.

ever since the food poisoning episode where both boys were admitted back in september, asyraf has not had a throwing up session or had high fever, except once on the second day of eid. hubby warned not to mention it but i'm just too happy he's (probably) has passed his unwell stage, for now.

asyraf is thriving. he's already standing up, started taking a couple of steps, able to clap, he loves giving people his face to be kissed, he loves playing catch with abang long, he loves playing hide and seek and peekaboo. asyraf is very attentive, he would watch amir play and observe what amir does. amir loves playing near the bouncing chair. he would put his toys at the top of the chair, watching the toys slide down. asyraf would always stand next to him watching him play. one day i saw asyraf standing alone by the bouncing chair, taking a toy and doing exactly the same thing amir did...watching his toy slide down the chair. at that moment, i had tears in my eyes. so that's what he's been doing all the while. he's been watching and recording what his abang long does and the first chance he got, he repeated what he saw.

asyraf is quiet, he doesnt say much. amir at this age has said a few words and was mumbling non-stop (sort of a warning of what he would be like in the future). asyraf just observes the things around him, looking around, absorbing the sights and sounds (more often than not with a frown on his face) and when we call out to him, he would have the biggest, most beautiful smile on his face to match his beautiful big eyes.

from what we see, asyraf can respond to a few words. when we say "nak" he would pass the item he's holding to us, when we say "nah" he would take it back from us, when we ask "where's mummy or daddy or abang long?" he would look around the room to find the person we mentioned and he would clap his hands when we say "clap". he's also trying his best to walk when we hold out our hands and say "walk" but he's only managed a couple of steps before swaying and going to the ground on all 4s.

asyraf's legs are quite strong. he's able to stand up by pushing his calves and thigh without support from his hands (even i cant do that!). now that he's mastered standing and controlling his legs, he's forever standing and loves watching the telly while standing up. he's showing signs of being a great central defender in the future (ahhh...steve bruce in the making - of course someone would disagree and say asyraf is sanderos). he also loves to dance, especially when i sing a particular song he loves.

putting asyraf to bed is still an exhausting task. if he doesnt want to sleep, he wont sleep. as long as the telly is on, he would not sleep no matter how sleepy he is. he would rather crawl around the room with his eyes closed than sleep. he still sleeps on his tummy, that's his preferred position. but he's open to sleeping on his sides as well now. he's also slept on his back but that's only when he's really, really tired. after months of not wanting to sleep in his car seat, he's finally adjusted himself to it. but that's only when we changed the newborn car seat to the older baby car seat. he seems to prefer the latter to the former. anything...as long as he sleeps in the car.

asyraf is chubby now. i really dont know why. he refuses to eat at home, he just drinks his milk. maybe he eats a lot in school. but i'm so surprised that with so little food and so many throwing ups, he's so big and chubby and cuddly. hubby would call asyraf "seketul" and i call him my big ball.

he's also showing his cheeky nature. he absolutely loves it when abang long gets scolded or when abang long cries. he would have a big smile on his face and then he would look at us all innocently, as if saying "asyraf baik kan??" he also loves disturbing amir when amir's asleep. asyraf also loves to hide behind the curtains and peek at us and then goes back behind the curtains. he would do that with the curtains or the sliding door in my room. he also loves to act. if he does something naughty (like throwing the remote control) and he knows he's about to get scolding, he would quickly put the back of his hands on his eyes and pretend to cry.

asyraf is special, even more special due to the difficult time we faced during his first year. as difficult as it was taking care of him throughout his trying moments, its even more difficult letting go of his hands when he walks, its even more difficult seeing him not depending on me, its even more difficult seeing him grow up. much as i do not wish to again go through what we went through, a part of me wants him to always remain a little baby, the little baby that wanted no one else but his mummy and daddy.

why is it more difficult to let go of asyraf than it was with amir?

Graduation

hubby had to work today so i went to amir's graduation day with tiza and tisu. the graduation was mainly for the kindy class while the rest of the students put up shows and received prizes for the year-end exam. amir got no 4 this time, he was no 2 during the mid-year exam.

i'm very proud of his achievement, he's able to tell numbers 1-6 and his a-f (not just recite but identify them as well). he also knows his jawi and is able to name different types of animals and body features. his arts and crafts results are better, he got a B compared to E last time around. he also got perfect marks for his malay and maths. i was not happy with his english at all, he only received 50%. obviously he converses in malay only at school. well, its ok...he's not even 3. but what happens when we change his school when he's 5? i plan to send him to an english-medium school will he have trouble settling in?

amir's class put on a dance routine. amir came on to the stage with his hands in his pocket. i think he was trying to stay calm. imagine coming in to a room of of parents with cameras and video cameras, all squatting down in front of the stage. he looked around the hall for us. when he finally saw us, he didnt smile. when the song started, he didnt do anything but clapped. i think the poor boy had stage fright!

next was asyraf's "cute baby" competition. it was for babies below 1. he was the only boy and couldnt compete with all the girls in frilly gowns and hairbands and hairclips. but he came home with a consolation prize. asyraf, you're still the cutest baby in my eyes...

ariff was there too. calmly waiting for the event to be over in his stroller...

Memory Lane

not listing today (mock & tiza...u hear that, i'm not listing today :-P )

i was surfing youtube. looking for songs rather than episode updates on grey's anatomy and heroes.

ralph tresvant - sensitivity (this deserves my "omigoddddd" award)
bell biv devoe - poison
goodfellaz - sugar honey ice tea (this was on repeat)
r kelly - bump and grind
boyz II men - motownphilly
after 7 - ready or not (i clearly remember zets...she loved this song)

and a tribute to my dear mock...
bros - when will i be famous (this is sooo not hip hop rnb but i remember the raya card where u wrote 'bros 4ever')

p/s i've got a mental picture of trueblue singing with me at the back of the class...

The Long Morning

went for check ups today. the plural is due to 3 appointments made today...mine, asyraf's and ariff's. as hubby had to go to the office by lunchtime, i informed him that we had to leave the house by 730am to avoid the morning crawl, so that we could get to the hospital a little after 8 and be the first in line at both clinics.

of course with 3 boys to bathe, not to mention the daddy and mummy, we only left the house after 8am. we sent amir to school first and was stuck behind a large number of vehicles behind the daycare. we got to the hospital at 9am. i went to verify the GLs while hubby sent our appointment cards to the clinics.

asyraf was just about to sleep when we reached the hospital but good thing he wasnt in a bad mood. we were able to have our breakfast while he watched sesame street and nibbled and ariff slept. went to my gynae's clinic first. she wasnt in yet. she came in late today and i was the 4th in line. so it was basically an hour-long wait. asyraf was being passed between hubby and i. ariff continued his sleep. spoke to my gynae about contraception. i initially didnt want any method of contraception as i wanted another baby immediately. but we made another plan for next year so we decided to push the baby no 4 plan to the year after next. after discussing with my gynae, i opted for contraceptive pills. that's the best method since i'm a diligent pill-taker (i've never missed my daily caltrade and pramilet intake during all 3 pregnancies) and its easy enough to stop if we decide to proceed with our next one.

we paid a courtesy call to the peadiatric surgeon who circumcised ariff. he checked his work and was pretty happy with it, he even gave ariff a lifetime guarantee. we discussed when would be the best time for amir and asyraf to be circumcised - not for another 6 years, we were told. drat...

then off to see the boys' peadiatrician. good thing amir was not around, if not he would either be on the play horse or taking the soft toys or bugging the doctor with 1001 questions. asyraf has a bad infection on his elbow, the doctor said it could be due to fungus and prescribed him antibiotics and a couple of creams, hope it'll go away soon. he's forever scratching his elbow and that makes it worse. surprisingly asyraf didnt cry when given his mmr jab, the doctor said he was very "gagah" (nice choice of word there doctor...)

ariff had his hepatitis B jab today. he was also given a few creams for the rashes on his face. the doctor wanted us to take ariff to the a&e to clear his airway. his nose has been blocked for 4 days now. its not too bad that he cant have his meals but its bad enough that it would wake him up at night. we came out from the clinic with a long list of medicine (4 creams & 3 syrups for asyraf and 2 creams & 2 nose drops for ariff). hubby and i went our separate ways, he went to the pharmacy to get the medicine while i took ariff to the a&e for the suction.

after a long, long morning at the hospital, we finally for home at 130pm. oh penat nya...

asyraf having while waiting at the clinic, ariff slept throughout...

ariff, all cried out...

This Weekend

been a pretty quiet weekend. i'm itching to go out but hubby doesnt want to (he's got a million excuses) so i'm stuck at home. not that bad, read "deathly hallows" yet again. i finished the book overnight and i'm definately sure i missed some bits out.

everyone's down with the sniffles, everyone from hubby & me right down to my itty bitty ariff. not full blown flu or anything, just sniffles. amir and asyraf's been having runny nose for a couple of days, though it goes on and off. i got it after them. mine's not so bad...it attacks at night when i'm feeding ariff and early mornings but after my coffee, it goes away (yeah...weird!). hubby got it yesterday and he's been taking piriton which makes him drowsy (and increases the volume of his snoring at night...sob sob...poor me!). i'm alright with the 4 of us having it but when it gets to ariff...i cant handle that. my baby's been having blocked nose for a couple of nights now...the night attacks are usually the worse. we lay him down a bit higher and not fully flat on his back so that his airway gets cleared. gave him the decongestant spray but not too much. the darnest thing is that the nasal suction thingy is nowhere to be found at this crucial moment...great! we've got an appointment with the boys' pediatrician on tuesday so until then, its 2 nights of getting up every 2 hours for me.

i noticed a few things about ariff's preferences. he absolutely hates wet diapers...he would toss and turn and kick to show its time for a diaper change. i usually change his diapers once in 2-3 hours and they're usually fully soaked. not too fond of the current diaper brand we're using (its as bad as the first one we bought) but the shop nearby dont sell S-size huggies. ariff also loves warm (almost hot) water, either for his bath or his milk. his bathwater temperature is usually either 38c or 39c. that's the same temperature as mine. the boy must have thick skin.

amir fell down from the island stool friday night. the thing about amir is he never sit still. he wants to pick this up, put this thing there, turn here, look there. he doesnt realise that the stool is high. last friday he leaned back to look at ariff who was whimpering in the room next to the kitchen and i dont know how it happen (i had my back turned), suddenly i heard a loud thud and he was on the floor. he got a big bump on his head to show for it. of course when asked "sapa buat.." he would have a thousand and one names preceeding "...buat" as his answer. it ranges from "azib buat" to "tiza buat" to "asyraf buat", the answer changes everytime the question is asked.

i finally made the bread pudding i was craving for since i saw it on syerah's fotopages. it looked quite nice but it was a bit soggy. shouldnt have poured too much milk to begin with.

the cleaner did not turn up as promised on friday. i badly need my bathroom and the boys' bathroom to be thoroughly washed. i hope they come next week. i've got a few things for them to do. the next visit (the friday before the party) i'll get them to fully focus on the ground floor. the grass needs to be trimmed, as well.

i hope the writers strike will end soon. all writers are on strike and taping of my favourite shows (grey's anatomy and heroes) have stopped. nothing's been written for future episodes and if the strike doesnt end soon, the current season will end just like that. no more mcdreamy...no more peter petrelli...(currently my scale is tipping slightly towards peter petrelli...)

countdown -
  • 6 days to amir's big event
  • 9 days to asyraf's step into toddlerhood
  • 13 days to the party

1

november is a big month for us, two of our boys will be turning 1. ickle ariff is 1 month today, while mok mok asyraf will be 1 year old in less than 2 weeks.

for me, both are significant turn of events. ariff turning 1 month old would mean no more bedung-ing (although we have stopped the bedung bit earlier on), sleeping in his cot, drinking more milk at one time, which would mean longer interval between each feed. not only that, 1 month would mean mummy can give ariff his bath (before this hubby's been bathing him...daddy handles small babies, mummy is too scared).

asyraf turning 1 is a big (if not huge) moment in hubby's and my life as parents. to be able to say we survived 1 year of taking care of our no 2 is amazing. no one would ever understand and comprehend how difficult it was taking care of him but more on that in 2 weeks time - asyraf's coming of age needs an entry all by itself.

today is ariff's day. ariff - our little quiet baby, our baby who has never given us a moment of trouble, our baby who has been so easy form conception, to the time he was in my tummy, to his birth day, to his first month with us.

over the past month, he has been -
1. able to sleep by himself in his cot (other than his cot, he wouldnt sleep so soundly - he would just lie down looking at the ceiling or the mobile);
2. drinking around 3oz at a time;
3. putting on a bit of weight, especially around his cheeks and thigh - how much he weighs now, we're not sure, that would have to wait until next week;
4. sleeping longer hours - around 4 hours at a time;
5. very organised and on schedule - from his sleeping time, feeding time and diaper change right down to when he doo doos every day (every morning without fail);
6. lifting his head when we put him over our shoulders to be burped (we used to burp him over our laps);
7. able to follow objects with his eyes;
8. able to adjust himself to his car seat (which asyraf only managed to do in his 7th month!);
9. able to lessen his night feeding to only once a night (this is a major point - hubby & i are able to get a good 4 hours sleep even at ariff's young age);
10. able to fit his feet to the bottom part of his pajamas - no more folded pajama feet for him;
11. doing his laundry on mondays (okay, so that bit i organised for him).

ariff today, sleeping peacefully, bedung-less in his cot...

Days Away

i looked at the lilypie countdown for asyraf. eeecccckkk...his birthday is just 2 weeks away. that means his party is less than 3 weeks away.

*hyperventilating for a while*

what have i done...what havent i done? lets see...

1. invitation - sent out
2. rsvp - well, that's beyond my control, isnt it?
3. favours for adults - halfway there (this isnt as easy as i initially thought it would be...)
4. favours for children - almost done, just waiting for the last item to be sent a few days before the party
5. favours for babies - i'm wrapping them today
6. cake - i havent booked it yet. whatever happen to the angel cake house outlet in taman tun?
7. caterer - this major item has not been settled by the person-in-charge
8 decorations - i bought the balloons. getting my sister to bring over the banner soon. i'm planning to get a '1' candle some time this week
9. photographer - thank you to the person who volunteered (heh heh...)

i'm almost there, arent i? i'm so nervous but i dont know why.

think i should go wind down with some help from reefa and goodfellaz...

Hair-Less

all my boys were born with thick hairs. i didnt like it cos all the (unseen) daki were stuck under the hair and it would start to smell if not cleaned properly. plus i wouldnt be able to identify cradle cap problems earlier on (like amir & asyraf had). so...we shaved them. and i just love bald babies...

so here's my botak no 1 and 2... and introducing my botak no 3
